Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 17 March 2025 – Japanese desalination companies are invited to register for the XPRIZE Water Scarcity, a $119 million, 5-year global competition designed to drive widespread access to clean water by creating reliable, sustainable, and affordable seawater desalination systems. The XPRIZE Water Scarcity is set to revolutionize desalination - reimagining systems, methods, and materials to drive its scalable and sustainable use.

Behind this competition is a landmark partnership between the XPRIZE Foundation and The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, an institution launched by the UAE in February 2024 with the mission to help address global water scarcity and create a world in which water is more accessible, affordable, and sustainable for all. The XPRIZE Water Scarcity, which is the largest XPRIZE in history, has been made possible by a $150 million investment by the Initiative and constitutes its first priority project.

Teams participating in the XPRIZE Water Scarcity will compete along two tracks with milestones spaced over a five-year period. Registration deadlines for Track A (Desalination System-Level Innovation) and Track B (Desalination Novel Materials and Methods) are March 31 and May 31, respectively. $119 million in prizes will be disbursed against these milestones, culminating with the awarding of the grand prize in 2028. The winning teams will create new desalination solutions to enable future-proof water supply for communities and ecosystems. These solutions must be scalable, cost-effective, reliable, and resilient in a changing climate, and should demonstrate enhanced environmental sustainability across energy and materials and minimize harm to marine life.

The competition is open to applicants from all sectors, including start-ups, corporate entities and research and development departments from universities. Teams working on partial desalination solutions are invited to register, with matchmaking events being hosted to help teams find the right partner(s) for the development of full desalination systems. Interested teams can find further information on requirements and register for the XPRIZE Water Scarcity at https://www.xprize.org/prizes/water

The call for applicants follows a fruitful meeting held in Japan in February 2025 between The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative and the Japan Desalination Association, where the two organizations discussed their views on what is needed to accelerate innovation in desalination and the Initiative’s interest in encouraging higher participation from innovators in the Japanese desalination sector in the XPRIZE Water Scarcity.
